Beta-lactam antibiotic.
Therapeutic characteristics
Cefalotin is a semi synthetic first generation parental cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of antibiotic activity. It is used in the treatment of infections and for surgical infection prophylaxis.
Metabolism and pharmacokinetics
Cefalotin is partly metabolized to a less active desacetyl metabolite. 50-75% of the drug is eliminated unchanged in the urine. It has a half-life of 30-50 minutes. Not suspected to have any effect on the activities of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
