Macrogols are not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Mixtures of long, linear polymers.

Therapeutic characteristics

Macrogols are used as osmotic laxatives. A solution of macrogol 3350 (or 4000) is used for the treatment of chronic constipation in a usual oral dose of 125 mL up to three times daily. Common adverse reactions of macrogols that can be confused with an acute porphyric attack are gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, and nausea.

Metabolism and pharmacokinetics

Not absorbed from the garstrointerstinal tract, eliminated in feces.
