Rationale
Acetylcholine is administered locally in the eye and does not enter systemic circulation due to rapid local destruction.

Therapeutic characteristics
A freshly-prepared 1 % aqueous solution of acetylcholine is administered intraocular to obtain a rapid and complete miosis (constriction of the pupil) in various intraocular surgeries.
Hepatic exposure
Hepatic exposure is insignificant.
Metabolism and pharmacokinetics
Rapid local destruction of acetycholine takes place via the action of acetylcholinesterase giving rise to choline and acetic acid.
